This is a full-time on-site role for an Attending Veterinarian located in Rockwood, TN. The Attending Veterinarian oversees and ensures the provision of adequate veterinary care and use of all study animals at facilities owned or leased by East Tennessee Clinical Research, Inc (ETCR). This includes canine, feline, equine, and the occasional bovine used in biomedical and agricultural research. The AV ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations and policies, as well as adherence to Animal Welfare Regulations; oversees several aspects of veterinary care such as husbandry, facilities, housing, preventative medicine and health surveillance, medical treatment, establishment of sedation, anesthetic and analgesic guidelines, handling and immobilization, exercise and enrichment; develops, oversees and participates in the training of husbandry staff.
S/he participates in site visits and consultations by external oversight organizations (FDA, USDA, industry partners, etc.) as necessary. The Attending vet serves as a member of ETCR’s Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee, evaluating animal use protocols and amendments, providing guidance and support to coworkers, principal investigators and husbandry personnel.
As the AV, s/he conducts various veterinary activities that are stipulated by study protocol or facility standard operating procedures. These activities include, but are not limited to, physical examinations, administration of vaccines, collection of biological samples, treatment of naturally-occurring disease or injury in study animals, and administration of test or control products.
**This is a designated essential position supporting the animal care program requiring attendance on some weekends, holidays and during emergency conditions, such as inclement weather and power failure.**
Qualifications
- Completion of an accredited Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) program. If degree not attained in the U.S., a certificate (e.g. Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG)) of equivalent training accepted by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) is required.
- Licensure in the State of Tennessee is preferred
- Practitioner’s DEA license for dispensing of controlled substances, preferably in the State of Tennessee.
- Demonstrates a commitment to communication, customer service, organization, employee training, and ongoing improvement of East Tennessee Clinical Research’s Animal Care and Use program.
- Must have intimate knowledge and familiarity with regulations, standards, and guidelines for care and use of vertebrate animals in research.
- Demonstrated leadership skills with workforce management.
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Strong consultative skills with the confidence and ability to enforce rules and make quick informed decisions.
- Ability to effectively function as part of a team, and in collaboration with diverse audiences.
- Ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion, tact, and confidentiality.
