DESCRIPTION:Charlie Daniel\, editorial cartoonist at Knoxville newspapers for 57 years\, will speak Thursday\, Sept. 3\, at 3 p.m. in the Goff Health Sciences and Technology Building at Roane State's Oak Ridge campus off Briarcliff Avenue and Laboratory Road.\n\nHis talk will open the second RSCC-Oak Ridge Institute for Continued Learning intergenerational lecture series and ORICL fall kickoff (where catalogs on the upcoming ORICL fall term will be available). Refreshments will be offered after the lecture.\n\nA native of Richmond\, Va.\, Daniel grew up in Weldon\, N.C. He attended Weldon public schools and Fork Union Military Academy before serving as a private in the U.S. Marine Corps.\n\nHe started drawing cartoons for the Daily Tar Heel\, the newspaper at the University of North Carolina\, from which he earned a B.A. degree in political science in 1957.\n\nA year later\, he joined the Knoxville Journal as editorial cartoonist. In 1992\, when the Journal closed\, Daniel moved to the News Sentinel\, where he continues to be its editorial cartoonist.\n\n"I have no desire to retire\," he said. He is married to his childhood sweetheart Patsy\, and they have two children and four grandchildren.
